Planning basics

How Much Emergency Water Does a Family Need?

There is no single perfect water number for every family. A household with two adults, young children, pets, medical needs, or a very warm climate may all plan differently. The most useful first step is simply to think through what your home would need if normal water service stopped for a short period.

Start with the people in your home

Consider drinking first, then remember that water may also be needed for simple food preparation, brushing teeth, basic cleaning, and caring for pets. Rather than trying to build a huge supply all at once, many families begin with a small, manageable reserve and improve it gradually.

Think about space and containers

Water is heavy and takes up room, so your plan should fit the space you actually have. Choose containers intended for water storage, keep them in a suitable location, and follow the container maker's instructions. A simple reminder on your calendar can help you inspect your supply and replace it when appropriate.

A reasonable plan is one you can maintain. A smaller supply that is stored safely and checked regularly is more useful than an ambitious plan that is forgotten.

Once you have covered the basics, you can explore longer-term options and compare them with your property's needs, local conditions, and budget.
